Martin Luther King was inspired by Gandhi who was inspired by Tolstoy and Thoreau.  Peaceful action is an international idea.  In the US, the White House is calling for Free and Open Source developers and users to participate in community education projects on MLKing Day.  Perhaps in each country there is an equivalent that could be celebrated?  Here's the blurb from http://www.serve.gov/mlkday_tech.asp which obviously uses a non-community-friendly OS:

"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?” We ask that you answer his call in 2010 by participating in the MLK Technology Challenge."
