Eight Use-Examples of Open Atrium Adapted for Schools - Example Eight

Example Eight

After a bit of research, the same student who checked the assignment in the previous example, now posts a preliminary response. She can revise it before the due date.

Notice how she goes to the assignment first, clicks the reference link and then uses it to open her own coursework blog. Once there she also chooses the proper course-category from a list of possibilities. Finally, notice how she uses the footnote module's syntax to add references to her sources of information.

Students are logging-on, too, and one of them checks the recently posted assignment (from the previous example).

She does a quick check and finds it's not as easy as she thought. Research practice-time.

The teachers have to focus directly on the coming week now, and this one posts an assignment she has in mind.

She'll revise it before meeting the students on the first day of the week.

Example Five

The same teacher who volunteered to help with the project in the previous example now follows-up by asking all faculty a question. His easiest bet is the "shout box," one of the standard features of Open Atrium. In the future, he thinks, he will suggest a name change for this tool.

Example Four

By now, another teacher has logged-in, and sees the other teacher's project and case. He volunteers to help and posts his own case under her project.

Of course, eventually, they'll want their students to use these tools for their projets.

Example Three

While on the site, the teacher who just read the news from the "head," remembers something she wants to bring up with the faculty: the schedule (or "time-table"). She goes to the "Cases" area, and posts a new project and case, saying what she'll do and asking for information.

Of course, then a teacher, somewhere, in some class, needs to see it -- and she does.

News-post using site-wide feature in adapted Open AtriumLike many of you, I have been burning the midnight oil learning how the revolution called Open Atrium 1 works under the hood.  In the end, it is hard to out-do its makers for elegance, so rather than rolling a new edition of Drupal 2, building on the great work in Open Atrium seems to be a smart move.

So, the challenge is not so much technical as social: how can we adapt it to work in a school?  I suggest envisioning the typical uses.  So, here we go:

It starts from the top in schools, so our hypothetical "head" of school will show us how to post the news -- to everyone.

After logging-in and looking over what's been posted lately, he finally goes to the "create content" button and posts his school-wide news.
